April 16, 2008 - Danita Thomas, "Quality, Safety and the Changing Regulatory Landscape." In light of the news regarding increased warnings on drugs, lead in toys and contaminates in foods, toothpaste, and pet food. The regulatory landscape is changing. New laws and regulations are being drafted and passed. The focus of this talk will be on the new laws that have passed, and drafted regulations that may take effect this year for medical devices and drugs.

Danita is a Senior Member of ASQ, and the Food, Drug and Cosmetic Division councilor for Region 8. She has worked in a number of industries, including: 3 years in oncology and hematology research; 16 years in manufacturing, including automotive; 8 years in pharmaceuticals; with over 14 years involvement in environmental health and safety (per EPA and OSHA). She is certified by American Society for Quality (certified Quality Auditor), Society of Plastic Engineers (Plastics Technologist), and the Regulatory Affairs Professional Society (Regulatory Affairs Certification).

May 21, 2008 - Rick Melito, "The Contrast Machine." It explores the way in which you can discover solutions to very complex problems using appropriate visual graphics as well as knowing how to ask the right questions. The discussion focuses on leveraging the contrast between two different states of being. In addition, there are a few good questions to ask that lead to quick “floor level” solutions to what appear to be complex problems. These techniques can be utilized in all industries and across all disciplines. During the presentation we shall explore how Dr. John Snow discovered how Cholera was conveyed as well as some very wise incites provided by Yogi Berra, Isaac Asimov, and Albert Einstein’s discussion of how a radio works. There will be brief problem presentations showing the breakthrough moment for safety, productivity, and product related problems. We will end with a discussion about how to resolve problems in a dynamic environment where the evidence tends to get destroyed using energy transforms.

Rick Melito has been teaching and solving technical problems for over 20 years serving a variety of industries. He possesses a Bachelor of Science from Youngstown State University in Computer Science and Mechanical Engineering and is a Certified Statistical Engineering Master in the Shainin method. His experience ranges from Federal JTPA Training, Pharmaceutical MIS Systems, and Automotive Engineering. In addition, he has developed multiple techniques which have led to quick “Floor Level” problem discovery and has presented at a national Statistical Engineering Symposium. Rick has also served as a General Motors Regional Master to effectively growing statistical engineering programs both in North America and General Motors Europe Division.

September 17, 2008 – Tom Fabek, “Using Data Collected By Embedded Sensors To Drive Continuous Improvements”.
Continuous improvement is a never-ending process of striving for perfection and driving out waste. The tools required are data, problem solving techniques, and group decision-making. Sometimes the detailed data required to define the current process is not readily available for certain factory operations and as a result the continuous improvement process stalls. This discussion will focus on how to use probes, sensors, flow meters, etc. to capture the valuable operations data that is required to drive a professional and never-ending process of continuous improvement. During the presentation we will take time to use the Internet and view some live “screen shots” of data being collected in factories around the country.

Tom Fabek has been working for over 20 years with a number of manufacturing companies including Alcan Aluminum, Michelin, and Goodrich Aerospace. He holds a Bachelors Degree in Mathematics from the College of Wooster and a MBA Degree from Cleveland State University. Currently Tom is General Manager of Profit Finders, a consulting and technology company that helps factories with continuous improvement projects.

October 15, 2008 – EAGLE Registrations, “Practical Approaches to Root Cause Analysis – Interactive Workshop”.
Corrective Action Plans and Root Cause Analysis are among the leading areas of frustration in managing your Quality Management System. EAGLE Registrations will give detailed overviews on two of the most popular Root Cause Analysis processes: 5 Why's/Fishbone (Cause and Effect) and the 8 D's. The ASQ Chapter will be broken into groups and presented with a typical audit finding that they will analyze with their team to find the root cause of the non-conformance. EAGLE Registrations will finish with a recap on approaches to the findings and then open the floor to Q&A.

Technical Sessions

These take place from 5:00 – 6:00 PM, and attendance earns 0.3 RU towards recertification.

It has been an honor to serve as the Cleveland Section chair for the past year and I look forward to my second year (2007-2008).

Once again, thank you.

Regards,
